While others might have been off on holiday during the February half-term, year 12 student Max H made it his project to travel to Calais with donations he had collected from school friends and the wider community to help feed refugees.

Max raised over £500, which was used to purchase four car-loads of food.

Max’s trip was part of the French aid organisation L’Auberge des Migrants, founded in late 2008 to provide emergency food supplies to migrants in and around Calais.

Max said: “It was an amazing, thought-provoking experience and also gave me an insight into what I would like to do after school.”
“I’m considering taking a gap year after A-Levels to work as a volunteer aid worker,” he added.

As well as taking donations, Max also volunteered for several days at the local distribution warehouse, sorting donations and preparing and sending out food parcels.
